Me: So, did you like it Aust?
Austin: Well yeah, obviously it was a good movie. (so nonchalant, like "uh duh, if you didn't think
that's a good movie, you must be dead.")
Me : It's an AWESOME movie!
Austin: Exactly. (Pause) It might be right up there with Star Wars.
Me (thinking to myself ): Wow, STAR WARS??? I was a little afraid you'd think it was totally 80's. But come to think of it, Top Gun is more current than the original Star Wars movies.
Me (talking again): Did it make you scared at all? ( I kind of forgot people die in the movie...that must be the 10 year old girl in me just waiting for the "Take my Breath Away" scene)
Austin: No way. It just makes me want to do it more.
So, by "it", I just hope he meant the movie in general and not the scary danger and dying parts.
Also, two more things:
1. In 1986, "PG" meant something totally different than it does now.
2. Watching this movie through 33 year old eyes...still awesome, but freakin' killed me. Don't die Goose, you have a wife and CHILD!
Okay, really I'm tearing up at Goose dying right now. Kills me, man.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching Top Gun this weeeknd. This was so entertaining to read. I can totally hear Austin make his assessment of the movie... and how adorable is it that it's right up there with Star Wars. Also: I think it's really great that he wasn't afraid to tell you he thought it was great. I remember being a teenager and sometimes not wanting to give my parents the satisfaction. I love Austin, he will do great things. Hope his dream becomes a reality for him, I know he can make it happen!
Dude, I need to see that movie again. For reals.
ReplyDeleteLoved this little peek into your post-show conversation with your TEENAGE SON. I think someone's gonna be gettin' the DVD in their Christmas stocking. :)
AND, there is no doubt in my mind that Austin will achieve his goals. How wonderful for him to have such supportive parents. Good job, E & S!!
That is SO awesome! I'm so glad he liked it, and admitted it! I'm with Keri, I'm not sure I would have given my parents such satisfaction, you've got a good one there Erin. :) He's such a sweet kid. I think he's quite brave and that probably has to do with wanting to do his career more. He realizes how much bravery it takes. It's probably really moving to him.
ReplyDeleteTop gun is one of my all time favorites that I have to sit down and watch every time it's on TV. Haven't seen it all the way through in about 15 years though. Best soundtrack EVER! Highway to the DANGERZONE!
Classic!!
So after your comments gals, I've deduced that maybe girls at this age are just plain bitchy. :-)
ReplyDeleteAustin doesn't come close to giving as much attitude as I did. It is indeed a blessing. He's a really great kid...so proud of him.
I felt bad because he asked if we had sent the movie back already, and Scott had this morning. Aust wanted to watch it again tonight.
Oh and Ali...I had to laugh at your stocking stuffer comment. I am WAY to cheap to waste a DVD in a stocking. That sucker gets wrapped and put under the TREE! :-) But I think Aust is gonna get it for his b-day in October!
