Finding What Works

I'm finally, FINALLY getting my butt in gear. Literally. After purchasing our iPhones I thought it would be a fun idea to download free audio books from the library to help motivate me to walk more. Ya know, to help break through the boredom that can rear its ugly head after walking the same route around your neighborhood over and over. Well, it turns out the audio book was a fantastic idea. There are even nights that I'm sad that it's already gotten dark (I know gotten isn't a word, but I can't think of a better word right now) and I have to turn off my book and head inside. But also, I downloaded this cool app called MapMyWalk onto my phone and it will map my route, record my pace and tell me how many calories I've burned. Gosh I just love technology. The BEST motivators though, aside from the glorious alone time, are the Mather sunsets. This time of year I can leave the house around 7:15 just in time to see this:

What's also nice is that since Scott and I trade off nights putting Harlie down, I don't have any excuse not to get out and walk 3 or 4 times a week, but I really don't think it's going to be very hard making that commitment. It's the squats I'm supposed to be doing on the OTHER nights that I need some serious motivation for.

  1. Loved these posts and really happy for you that you've set some time for yourself. I think it's great that you guys swap nightly kid duties. I have to agree with you, Mather sunsets are pretty amazing. You are really lucky to live in a neighborhood where walking out your front door leads you to your walking route (and omgosh that app is SO cool!) The squat thing made me laugh....so true! The book idea is genius! Can I divulge something to you? I was walking by the river Friday morning and had good 'ol Reba on Pandora...that playlist made me tear up on my walk. Not recommended. :)

Um, I wanna walk with you...I hate that leaving my house at 7pm to do so seems a little late for me. I wish I could walk out my front door and have what you have, sis. Let's do it though sometime.

    1. Why, did His Name was John come on? Why did Reba make you cry?

  2. Woohoo! So happy you're finding a routine that works for you, E! Is it positively affecting your life thus far? These photos are gorgeous! The second one is my favorite I think. I love the greens and blues, with fiery oranges sprinkled in here and there. I remember the fabulous Mather sunsets, so stunning...

Audio books are a great idea for your walks! If I don't have the kids with me, sometimes I'll listen to music when I walk, but my favorite thing is podcasts. There are so many great ones on iTunes and they're usually free. I downloaded the map my walk app, but haven't had a chance to use it (we've been riding bikes a lot lately instead of walking). I love stuff like that, though, so I'm excited to try it out!

Final note: 'gotten' IS a real word and, if I'm not mistaken, properly utilized in this post. :)

  3. Podcasts! That's a great idea, Ali!

Also, 'gotten' is a word? Really? It sounds so wrong. :-)

  4. I do love it! Josh was kind enough (ha!) to lend me his used earbuds so now I listen to music while I walk. It's awesome. My favorite station is the Mumford and Sons one and the Maxton loves him some Raffi(?).
