I still crave the food I grew up on, all the time. Mom's fried chicken and lasagna, tapioca pudding, Kraft Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese, Grandma's pot roast and tuna fish sandwiches with Nacho Cheese Doritos smashed inside. Oh, freakin' yum. Those are some of the foods that give me that cozy, familiar feeling, of home.
So I was thinking about my kids and what kind of foods they love...wondering what Austin will ask me to make in a few years, when he's tired of eating Pasta Roni and wants a home-cooked meal. His tastes haven't changed much since he was a wee one and I wonder if these will still remain his favorite foods...
* Any and all kinds of lasagna. He often likens himself to Garfield (his cartoon hero).
* Chicken Drumsticks - BBQ'd is his absolute favorite, but he also gets giddy about this relatively new Wilson-Creeger-Rich family favorite. The last time I made this he had EIGHT drumsticks.

* Pizza - He has pizza every single day for lunch at school. His favorite toppings are mushrooms and olives.
* Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken - he SWOONS over this stuff.
* Cheeseburgers - and make it a double!
* Garlic Bread - I make this with almost every meal it seems. I make it the way my mom did growing up...it's super simple and the way Aust loves it most. Sourdough slices buttered and sprinkled with garlic powder.
Now, Harlie on the other hand is a champion eater already, so it's hard to sort out what her favorites are, just yet. EXCEPT for the one shining star of culinary excellence that she cries out for all day long. "Ap! Ap! Ap!"
Applesauce. She can't get enough.
My mouth is watering. I'm staring and I went and read about all my faves. Smart, Keri! :-) This was super fun to read....can you write about food more often. Please.
ReplyDeleteAlso: EIGHT drumsticks!? How much food do you prepare usually? My goodness the jumnbo pack is necessary at a home with a teenaged boy. I'm impressed, A-man!
Also, Also: I almost mentioned Pasta Roni in the Mel post. ;-)
Seriously, Ali (I'm assuming she'll comment at some point or another). Please remind me how editing is important. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAaand....just checked out Pioneer Woman's blog. I want to eat everything she makes. Oh, Dear Lord!
ReplyDeleteI normally cook about 12 drumsticks (2 TJ packs). But I just discovered that Costco has the jumbo "portioned and sealed" thighs and drumsticks (like the breasts you get). I was so excited. Super Cheap!
ReplyDeleteI ususally have a plan to use the leftovers if he doesn't eat it all...his appetite is unpredictable.
And yes, Pioneer Woman...her kids are SO lucky! ;-)
This was so fun to read, Erin! I love the line about Austin requesting a home cooked meal when he's tired of eating Pasta Roni "in a few years." A few years?? Oh my god, I cannot BELIEVE that boy will graduating from high school IN A FEW YEARS! Craziness. Also, I am envious of your daughter's eating habits. It seems that Elinor is far more interested in playing with her food than eating it these days. But give the girl some mud, a wild mushroom, or a moldy orange and straight to the mouth it goes. Oy vey. ;-)
ReplyDeleteKeri, I'm confused about your comment to me...?
Ali- My comment was referring to our conversation the other night. You indicated that you devoted a considerable amount of time to the editing process. I'm ALWAYS finding typos after I "publish".
ReplyDelete...my first comment to Erin has a few typos.
ReplyDeleteyou fix 12 drumsticks!!!! oh my!;) I miss my mom's cooking! I try to make the recipes that she made for us as kids and while they're tasty enough, they just taste better when she makes them!!! I'm glad that most of my kids are good eaters. Olivia is my pickiest eater. She's so strange, won't eat a potato in any form, baked, fried, mashed, in soup nothing! Whoever heard of such a thing?!
ReplyDeleteAh, I see, Keri. Well, my compulsive editing is not necessarily a good thing. It results in me writing much less frequently than I would like to. It takes me so damn long to get a post done! You are so prolific, I love it, who cares about the typos? :)
